Most ancient civilizations felt that marriage and the family were the foundation of the security of the state. I don\'t know at what point the churches took on the ownership of marriage, but they did so only as a way of reinforcing the interests of the state. And in many of those ancient civilizations, the head of the state was also viewed as the chief priest.
